BMW-320i Racing

Tamiya is delighted to announce an updated re-issue of the classic 1/24 BMW 320i Racing, originally released as Item 24002 in 1977. This special edition features newly designed Cartograf decals, metal transfers, and an updated instruction manual, bringing fresh appeal to one of Tamiya’s most iconic early racing car models.

Following the success of the BMW 3.0 CSL in the 1976 World Championship for Makes, BMW returned to international competition with renewed determination. For the 1977 season, the company introduced the formidable BMW 320i Racing, a machine based on the production 320i two-door sedan but transformed into a highly competitive touring car contender.

At its heart was a potent 2,000cc 16-valve inline-four engine producing an impressive 298 horsepower. Extensive aerodynamic development, reportedly carried out in collaboration with the renowned Pininfarina design house in Italy, resulted in a distinctive appearance highlighted by an aggressive front spoiler and prominent rear wing, both designed to maximize performance on the race track.

The BMW 320i Racing made its competition debut at the opening round of the 1977 season, the legendary 24 Hours of Daytona. There, it began an intense rivalry with the Porsche 935 in the fiercely contested 2-liter class, creating some of the era’s most memorable touring car battles.

This updated re-release celebrates an important chapter in BMW’s motorsport history while offering model enthusiasts the opportunity to build a true racing icon. Combining classic Tamiya heritage with modern printing technology and enhanced presentation, it is a must-have addition for collectors and motorsport fans alike.
